I have great colleagues. One recently reminded me of an important lesson; celebrate the wins. So that’s what we’re going to do today!

Microwave vs. Slow Cooker

I recently published my second book. I mentioned this to a colleague in an off-handed way. He reminded me that this was a big accomplishment! How many people write one book, never mind two?

Oh, and I recently started a YouTube channel! I’m posting short, minimally edited “walk and talk” videos where I discuss whatever’s on my mind. Come on over and subscribe! Not everyone has a YouTube channel, either.

I have two clients who have also had big wins recently. One has become totally debt-free, including mortgage debt. Now he is in a position to really ramp up his saving so he can pursue his dreams.

The other client sold a very successful business he spent thirty or forty years building, growing, and maintaining.

Sometimes life feels like a microwave. We put something in, push the button, and 30 seconds later, Ding! It’s ready. So we move on to the next thing. Another 30 seconds, Ding! It’s done.

And sometimes, life is like a slow cooker. Things have to marinate and stew; it takes time for them to come to fruition.

Either way, fast or slow, it’s easy to be so focused on the day-to-day, the mental checklist we all have in our heads. We get that little dopamine hit from checking something off, but we move on so quickly to the next thing that we forget to celebrate checking something off the list!

Get the Guac!

My colleague said something else to me when we were discussing my book win. “Jonathan, get the guac!”

What getting the guac literally means is when you’re in line at Chipotle, and they ask if you want the guacamole, many of us will say to ourselves, “Well, the guac is an extra $1.99!” and skip it.

It figuratively means, treat yourself! What have you done lately that is worth celebrating? What have you done to deserve the guac?

Writing two books, starting a YouTube channel, paying off your house to become debt-free, selling a business. Those are all wins, well worthy of celebration. There were many points along all those journeys where it would have been easier to throw in the towel, dozens of times when instant gratification was resisted for the bigger dream.

Celebrate those achievements! Have a special dinner, go away for a long weekend. Or get the guac! I’m hereby giving you permission. You earned it.

If you have a win to brag about, I’d love to hear it! And if you have questions about planning for your future, we can discuss that too.
